PRACTICE

NAMASTE 2011
RESOLVE TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR GOODNESS

A New Year is a chance for a fresh start, a new beginning. As human beings, we tend to look backward before starting something new. We note all of the “mistakes” and “bad habits” we’ve had and resolve not to carry them forward. About this new journey, we say, “This time it will be different.”

And if it’s not different, we feel terrible. By defining future possibilities in terms of what’s already happened, especially our negative associations with past experiences, we hinder ourselves. We place our focus on flaws and faults and create goals based on correcting those flaws and faults all in the name of self-improvement.

What about acknowledging your goodness instead? What about looking into your heart and finding the joy and love and peace that is there and letting it shine out? What about letting that lovely light guide you for a day, a week, even an hour if not for the entire year?

At the end of yoga class, we often acknowledge our teacher and each other with an ancient salutation: Namaste. The divine light in me honors the divine light in you.

This word is much more than a simple greeting; it is a state of being. And when we say it at the end of yoga class, filled with the sublime joy we have just spent time deliberately cultivating, we really mean it. We really feel the light inside ourselves. And feeling our own light allows us to feel the light of those around us. We can all bask in the glow of our shared goodness, our true inner selves.

We are not a collection of faults, flaws and weaknesses to feel guilty about – to resolve to change – but a warm, glowing goodness open to the possibility of joy in any situation. When we choose to focus on this aspect of ourselves, and of others, all the flaws we thought we had tend to pale in comparison and often fade away in their own time.

Of course, sometimes we have become clear on some aspect of our life or our behavior that is no longer serving us and we would truly like to change. If this is so, our inner goodness can support this process as well! The key to making an intentional change without a strict timeline, without guilting and badgering ourselves, is patience. We change to serve ourselves. And sometimes it takes a while, but slow is sustainable. Change does not have to be all or nothing.

So, this new year, we invite you to say “Namaste” to yourself everyday; to cultivate strength of character through joy and peace; to love yourself just as you are.

Happy New Year!

PRACTICE

LET YOUR INNER LIGHT SHINE IN UTTHITA TADASANA

FIVE POINTED STAR

The holiday season is the perfect time to cultivate and project your inner light while staying grounded through a strong base.

Practice utthita tadasana to lengthen the entire body out from its center, improving both circulation and respiration for an increase in overall energy. Make more space for all the good will the season brings! Open your heart to share good tidings with others!

To practice:

1 – From tadasana (mountain pose), take your arms out to the side so that they are parallel to the floor, then step your feet wide apart. Check to see that the feet are parallel with toes facing forward and are roughly aligned under your wrists

2 – Press into your feet, energetically pull the knee caps up and roll the inner thighs toward each other then back behind you. Allow your tailbone to drop

3 – Reach out through your fingertips while at the same time allowing your shoulder blades to relax down onto the back of your rib cage and your heart to open

4 – Pull your low ribs in gently as you lengthen your spine, reaching the crown of your head toward the ceiling. Check that your chin is parallel to the floor and your gaze is straight ahead

5 – Feel yourself expand as you breathe in this pose. With each exhale, root your feet and drop your tailbone, with each inhale, reach out through the fingertips and crown of head. Open your heart

6 – Take 5-10 deep breaths here before returning to tadasana

November marks the beginning the holiday season. We all know the holidays can be a wonderful time of reconnecting with friends and family, celebrating the bounty of the Fall harvest and of giving from the heart. Sometimes, as much as these things can bring us joy, they can bring us stress as well. We are here to support you and your yoga practice throughout the holiday season!

Laughter Yoga, Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra are all great choices to bring the stress levels down and to help you reconnect to your inner stillness and joy. See dates and sign-up information below.

We also want to point out we have a couple of schedule changes for the month. We hope to see you at the studio soon!

PRACTICE

HARMONIOUS HOLIDAYS

TIPS FOR STAYING GROUNDED AND STRESS-FREE THIS SEASON (AND ALWAYS)

Breathe.
When you feel stress creeping up, take a few moments to focus on the in and out of your breath. Be right there with it. See if you can make each new breath a little longer than the previous breath. Breathe in peace and relaxation, let all of your concerns slip out with the exhale. Sigh through your mouth if it feels right.

Share.
Take a little time now, early in the holiday season, to identify a few key people in your life who you love and trust and who would be willing to listen when you might need them. If you’re stressed, don’t hold it in.

Nourish.
When we’re stressed or busy, it’s easy to let taking care of ourselves go or to fall back on some of our less supportive habits. Give yourself the gift of good food and good rest as often as possible.

Space.
Take a little time to reflect each day. Maybe a few minutes of journaling? Or meditation? Or a mini-savasana? Connect with yourself so you can clarify your needs and boundaries.

Enjoy yourself! Laugh and be merry!

PRACTICE

SITTING EASY FOR MEDITATION: SUKAHASANA – EASY POSE

One barrier to creating a long-term meditation practice for many people is an issue of bodily comfort. Sitting on a cushion on the floor, or even in a chair, with an erect spine for long periods of time can be difficult and strenuous, especially if one is unaccustomed to the practice.

The Sahaja Meditation series starting this month at Jai will help to address some of the many concerns with beginning and maintaining a meditation practice, but you can start now, with just a few minutes a day by practicing Sukhasana, or easy pose.

Here’s how:

1 – Place your sit bones on and toward the edge of a of couple stacked blankets or a cushion (about 6 inches high)

2 – Cross your shins, allowing each foot to slide under the opposite knees as you pull your legs in toward your body, but not so close that your feet are touching your pelvis

3 – Widen your knees slightly so that your feet come to rest under your calf muscles. Soften your feet so that the outer edges remain on the floor while the arches of the feet cradle the calf muscles. The thigh of each leg and your shins will make a triangle shape

4 – To find a neutral and erect spine allow your sit bones to drop into your support, as if you were rooting down into the floor. You might feel your ischial bones move apart slightly as your spine lifts

5 – Allow your shoulder blades to move away from your ears and slide down over the back of your rib cage, being mindful that your lower front ribs do not come forward and your lower back does not arch

6 – Breathe easily here, focusing on allowing the body to become more and more relaxed with each exhale. Sit comfortably for 3-5 minutes to begin, increasing the length of your stay as you feel increasingly comfortable in the position

PRACTICE

BACK TO SCHOOL, BACK TO BASICS

As we’ve seen in school, before we start learning something new, we usually review what we have already learned. This can be helpful in refreshing the memory and in providing a foundation for new learning.

Reviewing the basics before we dive deeper can also help us gain a fresh perspective on both the old and the new. Oftentimes, we find there is always something new to learn, even within a subject we have spent a great deal of time studying. This is especially true if we can cultivate a “beginner’s mind.”

A beginner’s mind means approaching something open to possibility and new learning. It means putting aside what we already know (or think we know) and allowing our present moment to influence and develop our understanding.

So, as we head back to school and work this Fall, see if you can cultivate a beginner’s mind. Start with this basic practice…maybe one of the first bits of yoga you learned?

And guess what? The benefits of spinal extension, breath awareness and core strengthening still apply, whether it’s the first time you practice or the 100th time. So enjoy!

Marjaryasana/Bitilasana (Cat/Cow)

1 – Begin on your hands and knees in table top position with a neutral spine

2 – Spread your fingers into the mat, pressing slightly downward. Press the tops of your feet into the mat

3 – On an exhale, tuck your tailbone and arch your back toward the ceiling and let your head drop, feeling your shoulder blades spread apart as your spine rounds. See if you can allow your breath to travel up the spine, articulating each vertebra, as it exits through your nose. Move slowly

4 – On an inhale, point your tailbone, fanning your sitz bones out and dropping your belly toward the floor. Press your hands into the mat and allow your chest to come slightly forward, expanding your collar bone. Again, see if you can use your breath to isolate the movement of each individual vertebra. Move slowly

5 – Repeat 5-10 times and then rest in balasana (child’s pose)

Note: For a change in perspective, you can also try initiating movement from the crown of your head rather than your tailbone

PRACTICE

SO HUM: A SIMPLE MEDITATION

Summer is such a wondrous time full of activity, it often zooms by. There is so much inviting our attention!

With a new season and new activities just around the corner, we can use our breath to quiet our minds and savor each moment.

By paying attention to our breath, we can indeed slow down time and develop appreciation for change, while investing ourselves deeply in our present.

Bring yourself into the rhythm of your breath anytime with this simple meditation. This technique is a great way to start the day, savor the beauty of nature at the beach or quiet your mind while standing in line.

Give it a try:

1 – Find a comfortable chair or floor cushion and sit with an erect spine (or stand)

2 – Either gently close your eyes or gaze softly at the floor in front of you

3 – Bring your awareness to your breath, especially the movement of the breath at the tips of the nostrils. Do not try to change your breath, just be an observer

4 – For the length of each inhale, let your mind echo the word “SO.” For each exhale, hear/say “HUM”

5 – Practice for just a few minutes or as long as you like. Take a few moments be still before moving back into your day

PRACTICE

HONORING MATERNAL LOVE – A MEDITATION ON THE CHAIN OF LIFE

When we honor our mothers, we also honor ourselves. Regardless of our current relationship with the woman who brought us into this life, she is deserving of our gratitude for the simple reason that she made it possible for us to experience this world.

Without her, we would not have become who we are now and we would not have the opportunity to reach our fullest potential.

To honor your own mother and all those who came before her, give this meditation a try:

1 – Sit or lie comfortably with your right hand, palm taut, over your navel. Hold your left palm to the side and upwards, inviting grace into your being

2 – Bring your attention to your navel. Remember that once you were joined to your mother by an umbilical cord and that she nurtured you and gave you life in her womb

3 – Think of your mother’s navel and of your grandmother: she gave your mother life, who gave you life. Your mother too was once a vulnerable child, as were you

4 – Think of your grandmother’s navel and how she was once attached by an umbilical cord to your great-grandmother

5 – Think back to your great-grandmother’s navel: she too had a mother, to whom she was once attached by an umbilical cord. And she too had a mother…

6 – Trace the unbroken lineage, passed from mother to daughter via the umbilical cord, through the centuries

7 – You will reach a point where you feel you are in a hall of mirrors, peeping into infinity. Acknowledge the interface with eternity and listen to your own heartbeat

8 – Feel yourself dissolving into awareness of a living chain and retrace the trail back to the present, rejoicing in your rich inheritance of wordless maternal love

PRACTICE
VILOMA PRANAYAMA
Sometimes with the rush of Spring and newness everywhere we look, it can seem as
if it all happens overnight. Anyone who has ever accomplished a long-term goal
knows this is not usually the case!
Rather, change/progress/growth happens in stages. We can use our breath to explore
and examine these stages, learning to appreciate the space in between each new phase,
all while bringing a sense of ease and lightness to the body and strengthening our
respiratory system for the summer activities ahead.
1 – Find a comfortable and relaxed sitting or lying position on the floor. Close
your eyes and begin to connect to your breath, noticing its natural rhythm and
quality
2 – Exhale completely. Inhale for a few seconds or about 1/3 of your lung capacity,
then pause and hold the breath for a few seconds
3 – Inhale again for a few more seconds or until your lungs are about 2/3 full,
then pause. After a few seconds, complete your inhale
4 – Exhale slowly, smoothly and completely, then repeat the process for each subsequent
inhalation
5 – Practice this technique with absolutely no straining for 3-5 minutes to begin,
gradually working your way up to 8-12 minutes, then return to your natural breath
as you rest in savasana (corpse pose)
As you practice, you can increase the amount of pauses in each breath to 5 or 6.
You can practice either staggering inhales or exhales, but practice only one technique
each day – do not follow one with the other. Working with the inhale will be rejuvenating
while working with the exhale will be detoxifying.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES

YOGA & SOUND: A SPECIAL KRIPALU YOGA CLASS WITH LIVE ClASSICAL GUITAR - SATURDAY APRIL 3 2-4 PM $22
Deepen your experience on the mat through a gentle to moderate flow of postures accompanied by acoustic classical guitar. Music takes us beyond barriers of language, verbal postural correction, inner monologue and monkey mind. The percussive ebbs of guitar directly meet the body’s own strings – sinews, tendons, nerves – often making it possible to let go of the mind a little more quickly so the body can feel its way into a posture.

PRENATAL YOGA SERIES - THURSDAYS APRIL 8-JUNE 10 4-5:15 PM $99 10 classes, $75 classes or $16/drop-in
Expectant mothers at any stage of pregnancy will learn and practice yoga poses, breathing and meditation techniques to assist in a healthy pregnancy and an active birth. This class cultivates strength, flexibility and tone in the body that is now a home for two. Meditation and breath create calm and confidence in preparation for labor, childbirth and parenting. Meet other expectant moms in this fun and relaxing class. No prior yoga experience is necessary. We do recommend that you check with your care provider before attending a yoga class.

YOGA FOR RUNNERS - SUNDAYS APRIL 11-MAY 2 1-2:30 PM $50 4 weeks or $16 drop-in
This class is designed to help correct the imbalances exacerbated by running. We will work on creating suppleness of muscles and an increased range of motion within the joints leading to a faster recovery from hard workouts as well as increased strength and resiliency of the body. We will also work on connecting breath with movement which is key in bringing ease and focus to one’s runs. For runners of all levels who want to increase their flexibility, core strength and balance. No prior yoga experience is needed.

YOGA NIDRA - SATURDAY APRIL 10 2-4 PM $22
Every second Saturday this Spring! Yoga Nidra is a powerful yet simple technique of guided relaxation; the perfect antidote for a busy and fragmented life. As you are guided to move your awareness throughout your body, you will experience deeper and deeper states of relaxation, resulting in a sense of peace, harmony and balance. Deep healing is possible with the practice of “yogic sleep,” a true gift to the body, mind and spirit. No experience is needed.

KUNDALINI CLEANSE FOR OPTIMUM HEALTH - SATURDAY APRIL 17 2-4 PM $22
Every third Saturday this Spring! A Kundalini Yoga workshop class designed to cleanse and strengthen a particular system of the body. Kundalini Yoga is a spirited practice which pairs kriyas (cleansing physical practices) with asanas, breathing exercises, mantra and chanting. Kundalini Yoga leaves you feeling strong and clear, busting through the ego to gain access to your true self. In Kundalini, you learn how strong you really are in body, mind and spirit.

BABY & ME YOGA SERIES - TUESDAYS April 20-MAY 25 10:30-11:30 AM $50 4 weeks, $60 6 weeks or $16 drop-in
This class is for moms or dads and babies at least 4 weeks until they are active crawlers. Learn postures and breath that you can practice with your baby. Poses focus on creating and restoring strength and flexibility for mom/dad, parent-child bonds, baby massage and baby yoga postures to aid digestion and development. Time to connect with other parents in our community. This class tends to fill quickly, reservations are recommended, but drop ins are welcome provided space is available. Limited to 12 participants.

RESTORATIVE YOGA - SATURDAY APRIL 24 2-4 PM $22
Every last Saturday this Spring! Restorative yoga uses blankets, blocks, cushions, ties and the wall to support the body in a complete letting go. Releases tension, calms the nervous system, removes the toxic leftovers from stress and floods the body with happiness and bliss. A gentle and slow-paced class. Totally relaxing, no experience necessary.

To register, visit www.JaiYogaHome.com to try our online registration system, available up to one hour before the start of an event! Or, register by phone at least 24 hours in advance. Just give us a call: 207.725.7874. Leave a message with your NAME, PHONE and which WORKSHOP you want to attend and we’ll return your call ASAP.
