February 2012: Happy Valentine’s Day!

Filed under: Spotlight Archives — jaiyoga @ 10:36 pm

Happy Valentine’s Day! We love you and are so glad you’re a part of our community. Below, our teachers share their love of yoga, teaching and the Jai Yoga community with you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love how [teaching] makes me a better teacher, a better person, to keep growing in love and gratitude. I am so grateful for my students and for the space at Jai. I love the warmth of the yoga room, the sunlight, the views over Maine Street, especially at night. I love the positive energy of my students and seeing their dreamy faces at the end of class. It’s a very nice feeling to be able to help people feel better; it helps me connect to the highest part of myself and to the greater good. Yoga is a lifestyle for me and I love all of it!  Thanks be to Jai, to Jen for holding space for all of us and for the students who continue to show up. So great…
With much love,
Sue Kelly
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Jai Yoga yogis,

I love you. Please be my Valentine.

David

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What I love most about teaching is 2 things:  I feel that I am making a positive impact on the world around me and I love being able to help people get into their bodies in a loving and compassionate way. The Jai community is so special and diverse. I appreciate all of our students and what they bring to me and to their fellow students.
Namaste,
Angie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What I love about the Jai community are the students who are so open to all the teachers, never complaining at the subbing teachers and appreciating what different teachers bring to their classes.

Also, I love and rely on the Jai teachers — gentle, open, and always listening to each other, and the students.

Sally

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love the willingness of our community to apply what they learn in the studio to their lives “off the mat.”
Teaching Yoga gives me the best excuse and motivation to carry my practice deeper into my life, to examine and to show up with compassionate awareness over and over again. I wouldn’t have this same degree of commitment if I weren’t a teacher of yoga. Thank you all for supporting MY practice, by supporting my teaching.
Big Love,
Jen
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What I love about the Jai community is the feeling of warmth and connectivity to the people that practice there.  It draws such a wonderfully, authentic group of people that I love being around!

Melinda

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love the laughs I have with the sweet people in my classes. I love that we all don’t take ourselves too serious. Everyone at Jai makes me smile.
Kevin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What I appreciate most about the Jai Yoga community is their ability to laugh, try again and to keep coming back. About teaching, I love the opportunity to be human, to weave the spirit of yoga into the everyday episodes of our lives.

Kara

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have taught yoga in many different spaces and places and I especially love to teach at Jai.  Each teacher here has their own unique gift and style to share which creates a space where I feel at ease and supported as a teacher and the trust and willingness of students to explore is an inspiration to me every time I teach!
Love,
Jessie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I love being a part of the Jai community as both a student and a teacher as you can feel the warmth, heart and dedication in each class. There is a palpable peacefulness within the studio that at once empties and enriches me and the daily experience. I LOVE getting to teach laughter yoga with the fabulous Jai community because it provides yet another place for that heart energy that is so strong at Jai to emerge and be shared freely and openly.

TIPS TO HAVE A HARMONIOUS EXPERIENCE AT JAI YOGA

General Requests
Here are our suggestions and requests to make your own experience, as well as the
experience of your fellow students, more comfortable and enjoyable:

Please…

* Turn your cell phone off before entering the studio
* Leave your shoes and coats by the door
* Avoid stepping on the mats of your fellow classmates whenever possible
* Make room for other students to set up
* Refrain from wearing scents
* Allow at least two hours after eating a large meal before coming to class
* Wear comfortable, stretchy clothes that move with you
* If you use one of the studio mats, please clean it with spray and a towel at the
end of class. Leave the mat out to air dry

Late to class?
While we expect you to arrive to class on time, or even early, sometimes life happens
and you may be late. Here is what you can do to support yourself and fellow students
in settling into class after it has begun:

* If the door is open, take a seat on the couch or your rolled up yoga mat until
centering is over. If the door is closed, please wait in the hallway
* When the time is right, i.e. when the teacher signals, or the centering/opening
meditation is over (usually after the OM), please come in quietly with cell phone
already off
* Write your name on the sign-in sheet on the desk. Then you may unroll your mat
and gather your props. If it is a large class, the teacher will help you to create
a space
* Be sure to check-in with the teacher after class to make sure you are appropriately
signed-in

Register online!
While not required, we highly suggest it! Registering online ensures you a spot
in your favorite class. And it saves time by preventing payment delays and allows
you a smooth transition into your practice. (We reserve the right to give away reserved
spaces one minute before class begins.) Online registration is available at www.JaiYogaHome.com.

CHRISTINE COTE:  A STORY OF HOW YOGA WORKS

When she first began the Basics Series at Jai Yoga in January of 2006, Christine was struggling with chronic migraines and an accompanying depression. “At the end of her rope” and on the advice of her neurologist, she decided to give yoga and meditation a try.

Nearly six years later, she practices yoga and meditation everyday. She has recently left her position as Registrar and Director of Institutional Research at Bowdoin College, a position she held for almost 19 years, to publish two art-focused journals and curate an online art gallery. She and her husband David enjoy walking together in the woods with their dogs. Christine describes herself as “very, very happy.”

Though managing migraines is still part of her life, Christine now has a greater understanding of the disease and how to help herself through it with the support of physicians and non-pharmaceutical methods, as well as a willingness to surrender to the situation. “Migraine is…not just a matter of having a headache now and then,” she says. “Management seems to be a delicate and ever-changing balance.”

Practicing yoga and meditation have been a large part of her non-pharmaceutical methods of migraine management and have changed her life in more ways than one. “Yoga and meditation have made me more aware of everything about myself,” says Christine. “This awareness had a lot to do with my decision to change my livelihood…I became very aware of the fact that I wanted to do something else [and] that I had the strength and courage to…An introduction to meditation is the greatest gift I was given at Jai.”

Through her practices, she also realized her experiences with migraine had led her to think of her head as separate from the rest of her body. “This kind of separation would prevent healing. But, yoga helped me to get back in touch with all parts of my body and mind and breath.”

Now, Christine has found a greater sense of ease and connection, one that she returns to regularly with meditation and yoga. “I listen to my body and soul and they tell me what I need,” she says. “Sometimes I do nothing but sitting poses, sometimes mostly standing poses; sometimes I move quickly, sometimes I stay a long time in just a few poses.”

“And that’s How Yoga Works.”

Yoga Nidra is a powerful yet simple technique of guided relaxation; the perfect antidote for a busy and fragmented life. As you are guided to move your awareness throughout your body, you will experience deeper and deeper states of relaxation, resulting in a sense of peace, harmony and balance. Deep healing is possible with the practice of “yogic sleep,” a true gift to the body, mind and spirit.

Learn to care for yourself as well as you care for others. You will also discuss how to make Yoga Nidra a regular part of your routine and learn other self-care techniques, such as self-massage.

Next workshop is December 10th!

WELCOME KEVIN WICKS! – VINYASA YOGA WEDNESDAYS 7-8 AM

We would like to welcome Kevin Wicks to the Jai Yoga teaching team and family!

Kevin Wicks, Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT), completed his 200-hour teacher training at the ShivaShakti School of Yoga and Healing Arts in Rockland, Maine in 2011.

While recovering from a back injury in 2003, Kevin found yoga when he saw a teacher from Jai practicing. Since beginning his practice, Kevin has found an overall sense of well being in body, mind and spirit. This sense of transformation and peacefulness led him to begin teaching yoga to friends and family and eventually to go through the training program at ShivaShakti.

Kevin practices many styles of yoga, including Mantra or Bhakti yoga. He is also certified in the Thai healing art of Nuad Bo-Rarn (bodywork) and sometimes incorporates this work into his classes.

Since joining the teaching team at Jai, Kevin has led a monthly donation-based Kirtan group, called Ananda Bhakti, on the 4th Friday of the month. The next kirtan will be on August 26th.

OCEANSIDE YOGA AT WOLFE’S NECK FARM
TUESDAYS 5:30-6:45 PM THROUGH AUGUST 9

Enjoy breath-inspiring views while you practice yoga at Wolfe’s Neck Farm’s wedding field. This all-levels class is perfect for beginners and advanced students alike.

Our outdoor, coastal yoga sanctuary is a nicely mowed lawn overlooking Casco Bay. During these classes, we will draw on our natural surroundings and inspirations for a lovely summer evening in Maine!

Pay online and sign up online. Then, all you have to do is bring your mat, blanket or towel, water and some insect repellent! (Usually the breeze keeps the bugs away, but sometimes not.) If it rains, class at the field will be canceled, but you are welcome to come to Jai Yoga for our moderate class from 5:45-7 PM instead.

Directions: From Main St. in Freeport, turn onto Bow St. Go 0.4 miles and continue on Flying Point Rd. (there is no turn here, but Bow St. becomes Flying Point Rd. here). Take a slight right (at the Y intersection) to stay on Flying Point Rd. Go 0.8 miles and turn right onto Wolfe’s Neck Rd. Go 1.6 miles and turn left onto Burnett Rd. (unpaved). The wedding field is the big field on the right before the pedestrian bridge. There is parking just beyond the wedding field, down by the pedestrian bridge.

KRIPALU YOGA AT JAI
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A KRIPALU AFFILIATE STUDIO

Kripalu is a Sanskrit word and means “being compassionate.” The Kripalu approach is one of cultivating compassion for oneself and others as a vehicle for personal growth and well-being.

We all know that yoga is a way to practice and experience compassion. In addition to being compassion-based, Kripalu Yoga also centers on the core values of authenticity, self-trust, courage to be self-expressive and a positive regard for others. In the Kripalu tradition, practicing these values is a way to integrate oneself, bringing all aspects of being into alignment for a harmonious life.

Many of our teachers trained – and continue to train – at the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Western Massachusetts. Therefore, many of our classes are taught in the Kripalu spirit of self-inquiry and transformation.

And because we are a Kripalu Affiliate Studio, we teach yoga with integrity and joy to people of all levels of ability and familiarity. We believe a regular yoga practice leads to a thriving human experience! And that is good for all of us.

ALL LEVELS YOGA CLASS with Kara Douglas
ONGOING TUESDAYS 5:45-7 PM

We invite and welcome all yoga practitioners, beginners to advanced, to practice together with this All Levels class. Whether you enjoy a vigorous practice or a gentle practice, there is much joy in sharing a practice where everyone’s strengths and limits are honored.

This class does just that! Each week we begin with a check-in so that Kara can learn what you need from your practice for that particular day, in that particular moment.
From there, Kara will craft a sequence of poses to meet you wherever you are. Many variations of the poses are offered, accommodating the needs of all.

Attending the All Levels class is also an excellent way to transition from the Basics to Moderate classes at Jai Yoga. The postures will be familiar, but you will also have the opportunity to learn how a pose can progress. You can choose whether or not the next step is right for you and experiment with different levels of intensity in a safe and loving environment.

You’re sure to enjoy this diverse class and will learn so much about yourself and your yoga.
