HONORING MATERNAL LOVE – A MEDITATION ON THE CHAIN OF LIFE

When we honor our mothers, we also honor ourselves. Regardless of our current relationship with the woman who brought us into this life, she is deserving of our gratitude for the simple reason that she made it possible for us to experience this world.

Without her, we would not have become who we are now and we would not have the opportunity to reach our fullest potential.

To honor your own mother and all those who came before her, give this meditation a try:

1 – Sit or lie comfortably with your right hand, palm taut, over your navel. Hold your left palm to the side and upwards, inviting grace into your being

2 – Bring your attention to your navel. Remember that once you were joined to your mother by an umbilical cord and that she nurtured you and gave you life in her womb

3 – Think of your mother’s navel and of your grandmother: she gave your mother life, who gave you life. Your mother too was once a vulnerable child, as were you

4 – Think of your grandmother’s navel and how she was once attached by an umbilical cord to your great-grandmother

5 – Think back to your great-grandmother’s navel: she too had a mother, to whom she was once attached by an umbilical cord. And she too had a mother…

6 – Trace the unbroken lineage, passed from mother to daughter via the umbilical cord, through the centuries

7 – You will reach a point where you feel you are in a hall of mirrors, peeping into infinity. Acknowledge the interface with eternity and listen to your own heartbeat

8 – Feel yourself dissolving into awareness of a living chain and retrace the trail back to the present, rejoicing in your rich inheritance of wordless maternal love
