PRACTICE

When we get busy or stressed, often one of the first things we let go of is caring for ourselves. During the holiday season, try to give yourself the gift of relaxation. Even 5 minutes a day can have a big impact on how you feel the other 1,435 minutes of the day. Think quality, not quantity. Think savasana!

Savasana (Corpse Pose)

1 – Recline on your mat. The spine should be in a neutral position and the head positioned so that the forehead and chin are on an even plane. Use a folded blanket under the head or a rolled blanket under the knees for extra comfort if desired.

2 – Open the chest. Tuck the shoulder blades under while lifting gently through the sternum, then relax and turn your palms up.

3 – Let your body be heavy. Completely release to gravity and let it nestle you down to the floor.

4 – Do a quick body scan. Start at the toes and work up to the crown of the head, bringing awareness briefly to each area and allowing each area to fully let go. Especially let go of tension in the face, eyes and jaw.

5 – Relax the mind. A good way to do this is to observe the breath as it naturally moves in and out of the nose. If thoughts present themselves, acknowledge them, but set them aside.

6 – After 5 minutes or more, when you’re ready to come out, with an exhalation, roll to the right side. Stay there for a few breaths before pressing your hands into the floor and lifting the torso, letting the head follow. Take a few more breaths before opening the eyes gently and rising.

Recommendations: use props! Eye pillows, blankets, bolsters, sandbags. Whatever you have available and whatever will make you feel most nurtured.
