PRACTICE

TAKE A SEAT: GET READY FOR SPRING WITH UTKATASANA (CHAIR POSE)

During the winter months in Maine, we all tend to spend a lot more time in our seats, whether in our cars as we drive slowly through the slushy streets, at our desks working and studying or cuddling up on the couch with a good book.

But, sitting does not have to be entirely passive. And now that March is here, we need to begin waking our bodies in preparation for Spring!

This month, take your yoga practice into your daily life! First, do the following practice a few times and then, we encourage you to see just how much you can apply the principles of the pose whenever you take a seat.

Give it a try:

1 – From Tadasana, keeping your shoulder blades settled onto your back ribs, lift your arms so they are parallel to the floor with palms facing inward

2 – With a straight back, bend your knees and take your sit bones back as if you were to sit into a chair. The more parallel to the floor you can make your thighs, the stronger the pose will be. Here, it is okay for the knees to go beyond the toes

3 – Spread your sit bones as you draw the head of the thigh bones back and apart. Find length through the spine with a gentle tuck of the tailbone and drawing in of the low belly

4 – If you like, take your arms overhead, reaching the fingertips to the ceiling while keeping your shoulder blades on your back

5 – Breathe here for 3 full, beautiful, complete breaths, feeling your body working together as a complete unit before mindfully returning to Tadasana

6 – Repeat 1-3 more times

Note: For an extra challenge, play with shifting your weight between your heels and toes as you inhale and exhale. This version of the pose is called Rocking Chair

Now, think about what aspects of this posture you can use when you take a seat at the dinner table or at your desk. Can you keep your spine long by sending your sit bones down and back? Can you keep your shoulders down and back? What else?

Enjoy your yoga as you grow stronger and move toward spring!
